About Dr. Lise Alschuler
Dr. Lise Alschuler is a naturopathic doctor with board certification in naturopathic oncology. She graduated from Brown University with an undergraduate degree in Medical Anthropology and received her doctorate in naturopathic medicine from Bastyr University in 1994.
Dr. Alschuler currently practices at Naturopathic Specialists, based in Scottsdale AZ. She is past-President of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, a founding board member and current President of the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians. She serves as the President Emeritus of the Naturopathic Post-Graduation Association. Dr. Alschuler is the executive director of TAP Integrative, a nonprofit web-based educational resource for integrative practitioners. Previously, Dr. Alschuler was the Vice President of Quality and Education at Emerson Ecologics, where she developed and managed the Emerson Quality Program, a rigorous quality assurance program for professional dietary supplement brands. Prior to this position, Dr. Alschuler was the department head of naturopathic medicine at Midwestern Regional Medical Center – Cancer Treatment Centers of America, a JCAHO accredited regional hospital offering comprehensive integrative cancer care. Dr. Alschuler has also served as the clinic medical director and botanical medicine chair at Bastyr University Natural Health Clinic.
Dr. Alschuler is the co-author of The Definitive Guide to Cancer: An Integrative Approach to Prevention, Treatment and Healing, now in its 3rd edition (Random House, 2010) and Definitive Guide to Thriving After Cancer: A Five-Step Integrative Plan to Reduce the Risk of Recurrence and Build Lifelong Health (Random House, 2013). Dr. Alschuler has published numerous articles on herbal medicine and naturopathic medicine in the lay press as well as in the medical literature. She, along with her co-author Karolyn Gazella, have created www.FiveToThrivePlan.com, a multimedia website dedicated to sharing information about integrative cancer prevention and treatment. They also co-host a daily radio show, Five To Thrive Live! on the Cancer Support Network which provides listeners with tools for living healthier lives in the face of cancer.
Dr. Alschuler is widely recognized internationally as an expert in cancer treatment and prevention and is a sought-after speaker to physicians, patients, and the general public. She makes regular media appearances and has received professional recognition and awards for her work in integrative medicine. In 2014, Dr. Alschuler was awarded Physician of the Year by the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians. Also in 2014, Dr. Alschuler recieved an honorary doctorate from Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine and was awarded the Pizzorno Founder’s Award by Bastyr University. She is a recipient of the President's Award from the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians and was named as one of the "Naturopathic Elders" by the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine. When practicing in Seattle WA, Seattle Magazine recognized Dr. Alschuler as one of Seattle’s “Top Doctors”.
In 2008, Dr. Alschuler was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent surgery, received chemotherapy and radiation and remains on hormonal treatment. She has integrated natural supplements, diet, exercise and other lifestyle changes throughout her treatment and, as a result, she has felt like a healthy person with cancer and a healthy person receiving treatment. She has fully recovered from her treatments and remains dedicated to an integrative prevention of recurrence plan. She has incorporated the learnings of her own experience with cancer into her work with others facing the challenges of this disease. Dr. Alschuler is licensed as a naturopathic doctor in Arizona and New Hampshire. She calls Chicago, IL and Tucson, AZ home.
